چکیده

Torsional vibrations and resonance problems with synchronous machines are most frequently encountered in rotor systems with long shafts and large inertias constituting a weakly damped mechanical resonator which exhibits a low resonance frequency. It is impossible to obtain a effective mechanical damping for these torsional vibrations, but by using a power electronics device and an inductive or capacitive energy storage which is connected to the stator winding of the synchronous machine, which produce the same effect as an increased natural damping for oscillation mode in the rotating shaft assembly. This electrical method is applicable to torsional vibration problems in generators and electrical drive systems. The paper presents examples for the successful suppression of torsional resonances in synchronous machines of an isolated power system based on flywheel generators and by three phase fault in the second benchmark model of the IEEE.

Torsional Mode Damping for Electrically Driven Gas Compression Trains in Extended Variable Speed Operation

The oil and gas industry has a growing demand for electrically driven trains operated at variable speeds. Variable frequency electrical drives enable increased operational flexibility and energy efficiency. This is of great importance in applications requiring high power, such as gas compression. Load commutated inverters (LCIs) are one of the most widespread technologies for driving large gas ...

Application of the Kalman Filters in the Self-Commissioning High-Performance Drive System with an Elastic Joint

Torsional vibrations limit the performance of many industrial drives. They decrease the system reliability, product quality in some specific cases they can even lead to instability of the whole control structure. The problem of damping of torsional vibrations originates from the rolling-mill drive, where large inertias of the motor and load parts with a long shaft create an elastic system (Hori...

Drill string Vibration Modeling Including Coupling Effects

Abstract: The governing equations of motion for a drill string considering coupling between axial, lateral and torsional vibrations are obtained using a Lagrangian approach. The result leads to a set of non-linear equations with time varying coefficients. A fully coupled model for axial, lateral, and torsional vibrations of drill strings is presented. The bit/formation interactions are assumed ...

Kinetic Energy Harvesting

This paper reviews kinetic energy harvesting as a potential localised power supply for wireless applications. Harvesting devices are typically implemented as resonant devices of which the power output depends upon the size of the inertial mass, the frequency and amplitude of the driving vibrations, the maximum available mass displacement and the damping. Three transduction mechanisms are curren...

A New Scheme for Damping Torsional Modes in a Series Compensated Power System

In the present paper, a new scheme for damping torsional modes in a series compensated power system has been developed. The proposed scheme, utilizes the effectiveness of combined active power and frequency (C.A.P.F.) SVS auxiliary controller in co-ordination with an induction machine damping unit coupled to the T-G shaft. Studies are conducted on the first IEEE benchmark model. The damping sch...
